Modern pizza was invented in the 18th or early 19th century here in Naples. The pizza shown is the a pizza Margherita, one of the oldest kinds of pizza invented in 1889. Possibly named after Queen Margherita, who was visiting, the simple pie consists of tomatoes, basil, and fresh mozzarella cheese and also make up the colors of the Italian flag.
TRAVEL TIP: Be aware of seating charges which are common to touristy areas like Naples.
