Rooibos Espresso

Rooibos tea is made from a family of plants native to Western Cape province of South Africa. It has a slightly malty, slightly grassy flavor that’s hard to describe and is characteristically red in appearance. While I’ve had rooibos tea at home on numerous occasions, it was in Cape Town and other parts of the country where I found a rooibos tea being served in espresso form. At a Cape Town area Woolworths’ (a store whose name you might remember if you’re my age or older, but doesn’t at all resemble its American five-and-dime name counterpart), the café was serving up a red espresso.

Very strong in taste and deep red in color, the red espresso amazingly even had the characteristic créma. While I typically enjoy my coffee black, this one actually tasted amazing enhanced with a bit of sugar.

I even ended up taking home a bag of redespresso® brand rooibos so I could pull my own shots. Ask me to make you one if you’re ever in the area!
