Coffee Cherries: The Beginning of a Cup of Joe

One of Starbucks newer beverages is a line of “cascara” lattes. Cascara is the name for the hull of a coffee cherry that contains a coffee bean, which is actually the dried and roasted seed of a coffee cherry.

I spent a couple days at the Hacienda Venencia coffee plantation in Manizales, Colombia to relax, learn how coffee is made, and drink as much as I wanted. On the plantation, the workers pick each ripe coffee cherry by hand to create excellent coffee. And the coffee cherry is edible! It has a very subtle sweetness to it without any tartness that you would expect from a berry. Certainly a treat to be able to walk through rows of coffee plants and eat the bright red coffee cherries.
