What to Drink When You Break the Fast During Ramadan

During my tour of Israel and Jordan, we happened to be passing through during the month of Ramadan. It is during this month that Muslims are required to fast from sunrise to sunset. Aside from the fact that the restaurants we ate at were nearly deserted until about 7pm when they would suddenly become packed and noisy, There were several drinks that we tried that are commonly consumed during Ramadan and traditional for breaking the fast every evening.

Shaninah was essentially a salty yogurt drink and not very appealing. Tamer Hindi was a juice made from tamarind fruit that you can find all over the world. Qamarradin is a juice made from a type of apricot. Kharoub is a juice made from the carob fruit, which is the same ingredient in carob chips, those chips that are often used as a substitute for chocolate chips; the juice actually had a mild cocoa taste.
