Pennsylvania Dutch Apple Dumplings

During a trip to Philadelphia to visit my college roommate, I explored historic Reading Terminal Market to look for something for breakfast. I found the Dutch Eating Place, which is run by Amish and Mennonite families. The speciality here are apple dumplings, which has its American origins in the area.

Often attributed to colonial Amish Pennsylvania Dutch, it’s an entire peeled and cored apple surrounded by pastry dough, filled with cinnamon, sugar, and butter, and baked until the apples tenderize into a yummy mush. Sounds more like a dessert, but according to the Amish, it’s traditionally eaten for breakfast (much to my relief).

It’s another delicious food with local roots that you’ll have to try along with your cheesesteak and water ice.
