Of the many Belgian foods I ate, Antwerp hands are unique in that they are a regional specialty. Though they’re a pretty basic almond cookie, legend has it that they’re tied to naming of the city of Antwerp (Antwerp is translated from the Belgium phrase “throw a hand”) and was created as a result of a competition to create a local specialty.
Apparently, this simple cookie is made by a single company, Antwerpse Handjes, who has actually patented the shape and packaging.
